Project Atlantic Film Course

Week 4-5 Tell a Visual Story

Assignment One: Video Slideshow

The first task is a simple slideshow-style assignment, using only still images to tell their story, as in a Google Slides Presentation or Powerpoint, but on WeVideo.   They add text, transitions, effects, music and voiceover to try to capture that documentary feel.  Students watch tutorials on Visual Thinking, WeVideo and basic editing.

In my Environmental Science course, my students do this as a “Timeline of Environmental History” assignment.  Each student researches an important figure in environmental science, just as I have always done in paper form at the beginning of the course.  This time, students produce a one or two minute portrait of their figure and their contribution using five images that they choose.

The films are produced to Google Drive, and can be linked to QR codes that are put on a physical timeline to make an interactive, scanable Timeline in a hallway.  Also, a longer film can be produced by stringing together the timeline entries.

Students submit their piece after a week’s work, and are given feedback by teacher and peers.  They then have one week to produce their final piece for their grade.
